The Sun and What It Means

Last year, I conducted a brief yet hopefully insightful overview of The Sun and what it means. For some reason this is a card that I have had a lot of questions about recently – particularly the reversal.
After reflecting on its symbolism and implications and how others may see it, I felt it was time to revisit this card’s complexities and nuances.
So, What Is The Sun?
At first glance, The Sun may appear deceptively simple; after all it does radiate positivity and warmth. However, just like the complexities of life itself, it embodies a multitude of meanings and interpretations that can lead to potentially transformative insights.
When you interpret The Sun within the context of almost any part of life, it’s important to recognize that its appearance doesn’t automatically signal sheer joy, overwhelming satisfaction, or a swift rise in status through promotions or hefty pay raises.
A Better Way to View The Sun
Instead, The Sun offers a different kind of clarity and a promise of renewed energy in your professional life. The Sun suggests a shift is on the horizon. It indicates that you will soon be granted greater autonomy, enabling you to continue in a manner that resonates more with your skills and passion.
Furthermore, if you are seeking guidance about a particularly troublesome individual and The Sun emerges in the reading, it brings an element of assurance. The card signals that the problematic figure may indeed become a memory. This card is not merely a ray of hope; it is a declaration of freedom from an oppressive influence thus paving the way for a happier existence.
The Sun Is a Call to Action
Whatever the question or situation, the essence of The Sun is a call to action. It’s an encouragement for you to engage in introspection to uncover your true desires.
The universe is effectively proclaiming, “We can align with your goals and aspirations, but first, you must articulate them clearly.” This invites an exciting journey of self-discovery where each individual can unearth their authentic dreams and aspirations amid the distractions of daily responsibilities.
What About Reversals?
As many of you might know, my approach to tarot reading generally emphasizes the upright position of cards, which means I see the reversed as a lesser version of the upright and not a radically different interpretation. I don’t particularly place emphasis on reversed cards, but I do occasionally use them – just not often.
Yet, I understand that different readers may find value in working with those reversals. For me, it feels somewhat unrealistic to declare that The Sun upright is exceptionally positive, while its reversed counterpart is viewed as very negative.
I believe it’s necessary to slow down and reconsider this black and white interpretation. If you choose to assign an alternate meaning to a reversed major arcana card, you must remember that it is intricately tied to its upright interpretation.
My Almost 40 Years of Tarot Reading Says This…
In my view, which has proven effective for my clients and myself over the more than 40 years I’ve worked with tarot, when The Sun is reversed, it ought to be seen as a temporary diminishing of its energy rather than a complete negation of hope and joy. Think of The Sun as being a light and hazy day – not dark an stormy one!
The Meaning of The Sun in Conclusion
The Sun and its meanings remain impactful and alive, serving as a reminder of warmth, clarity, and enlightenment. So, at least to my mind, saying an upside-down Sun is negative feels like a gross oversimplification.
I don’t tell anyone how they should read as that’s an individual choice. What works for me may not work for you and vice versa. But I do recommend giving it some thought instead of a doom and gloom approach.
Instead, consider The Sun as a beacon. One that is guiding you through the complexities of life. Even reversed that Sun is still doing just that.
