Just What Is the Scariest Tarot Card?

For many – especially new readers – the title of the “scariest” tarot card is easily claimed by Death. Its grim name and iconic imagery of the grim reaper understandably provoke instant dread in many readers.

Many tarot beginners interpret it literally, fearing it predicts physical death, profound loss, or an unavoidable, terrifying ending. For most of us this kneejerk reaction stems from a deep aversion to change and especially change that embraces the unknown.

However, seasoned readers emphasize that this card is almost never about literal death and in 30 years of reading professionally I have only ever known one occasion where literal death was the correct interpretation.

So, if Not Actual Death Then What?

Well, instead of Death meaning death, you need to understand that it is probably the ultimate card of transformation. It represents the necessary ending of a chapter, situation, or identity that has simply outlived its purpose.

The old must be cleared away to make space for new growth. Like a forest fire that allows for rebirth of the very forest that was destroyed, or the shedding of a snake’s skin, its purpose is renewal.

Therefore, while it is somewhat part of human nature to be apprehensive if not scared of this card, Death is ultimately a rather profound symbol of liberation.

What you are basically being told is to let go of what no longer serves you or is in your best interest. So, even though it means something is ending and necessarily so at that you will ultimately find that a truer and more balanced beginning will emerge.

And the True Message of the Death Tarot Card?

Although Death can be a difficult card to pin down when starting reading tarot cards it does become easier with time an practice.

In many ways and despite the complexity it sometimes heralds its actual meaning in its most simplistic terms is this:

The true message of Death is not “ending,” but “evolving.”
